Natural vs. Man-Made: Why “Natural” Doesn’t Automatically Mean Safer

The Short Answer

“Natural” describes where an ingredient comes from, not how it behaves in your body. Plants, minerals, and synthetic lab-made compounds can all be perfectly safe at the right dose, and all be harmful at the wrong one — the source doesn’t change that. “Natural” also isn’t a regulated term in Canada, the US, or most other markets, so a label can use it freely regardless of formulation. This page isn’t an argument for choosing synthetic ingredients over natural ones, or the reverse — it’s a case for dropping “natural” as a safety shortcut altogether, and asking better questions instead.

What “Natural” Actually Means (and Doesn’t)

In cosmetics and household product labelling, “natural” has no fixed legal definition in Canada or the US. A brand can call a product “natural” if it contains a single plant-derived ingredient alongside a formulation that’s otherwise entirely synthetic, and nothing prevents that use of the word. Compare that to a genuinely regulated claim — like an organic certification, which has defined criteria a product must meet — and the gap becomes clear. “Natural” is a marketing word first, not a safety or formulation standard.

That matters because plants themselves are chemical factories. Every plant produces its own compounds for its own reasons — to deter insects, resist fungus, or protect against UV damage — and many of those compounds are potent, some are useful to humans in small amounts, and some are genuinely toxic. Nature didn’t design any of this with human safety in mind; it just happened to overlap with human use in some cases and not others.


A Real Example: Comfrey

We used this example on our Hazard vs. Risk page, and it’s worth returning to here because it’s the clearest real case of natural-does-not-equal-safe available right now. Comfrey extract — used in some balms and topical creams — is currently facing a proposed removal from Health Canada’s approved exceptions list, because it naturally contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids, compounds linked to liver toxicity with repeated exposure.

Nobody synthesized those alkaloids in a lab. The plant makes them on its own, as part of its normal chemistry. If comfrey were being evaluated for the first time today under a “prove it’s safe” standard rather than a legacy exception, it’s not obvious it would pass — which is exactly why the exception is being reconsidered.


Man-Made Doesn’t Mean Dangerous, Either

The reverse assumption is just as common and just as unreliable. A synthetic preservative that prevents mold and bacterial growth in a water-based product isn’t inherently more dangerous than a plant extract doing a similar job — in some cases, synthetic preservatives have far more toxicology data behind them than the “natural alternative” marketed to replace them, simply because they’ve been studied longer and more rigorously.

Some of the most heavily-tested, well-understood ingredients in cosmetic science are synthetic, precisely because synthesis allows for a level of purity and consistency that’s much harder to guarantee from a plant-derived batch, which can vary based on soil, growing conditions, and extraction method. Consistency and known dosing are safety advantages, not red flags.


Why the Distinction Feels Meaningful Anyway

It’s a reasonable instinct — humans have a long track record with plants our ancestors ate and used, and a much shorter track record with lab-synthesized compounds invented in the last century. That history is a legitimate reason for caution around genuinely novel synthetic chemicals with limited long-term data.

But that’s a different claim than “natural is safer than synthetic” as a blanket rule. It’s closer to “novel and understudied deserves more caution than well-established and well-studied” — and plenty of natural ingredients are novel and understudied, while plenty of synthetic ingredients are extremely well-established. The real variable is how much is actually known about a specific ingredient’s safety profile, not which column it falls into.


Questions Worth Asking Instead

Rather than “is this natural,” a more useful set of questions:

  1. How much safety data actually exists for this specific ingredient? Long history of safe use (in either category) is meaningful; being new is not automatically a problem, but it does mean less is known.
  2. At what concentration is it used, and does that align with established safety margins? (See our Hazard vs. Risk guide for why this matters more than the ingredient’s origin.)
  3. Is there a recognized certification behind the safety or sourcing claim, or is “natural” doing all the work on its own? (Our Certifications Decoded guide breaks down what different labels actually verify.)
  4. What’s it being compared to? A synthetic preservative “replaced” by a less-studied plant extract isn’t automatically an upgrade — sometimes it’s a downgrade dressed up in more appealing language.

What This Doesn’t Mean

This isn’t an argument that synthetic is always better, or that plant-derived ingredients deserve more suspicion than lab-made ones. Both categories contain excellent, well-studied, genuinely safe options, and both contain ingredients worth real caution. The point is narrower and, we think, more useful: origin alone tells you nothing about safety. Evidence does.


FAQ

Isn’t “natural” at least a reasonable starting filter?

Not really — it filters for marketing language, not safety data. A specific ingredient’s actual research and use history is a far better filter.

Are synthetic preservatives worse than natural ones?

Not inherently. Some synthetic preservatives are among the most well-studied ingredients in cosmetic science. The right question is which preservative has the safety data and concentration to back up its use in a specific product — not which one sounds more natural.

Why do so many “clean beauty” brands lean on the word “natural” if it’s not meaningful?

Because it tests well with consumers and isn’t legally restricted, so it’s a low-cost, high-impact marketing choice — not necessarily a reflection of rigorous formulation standards.

Does this mean I shouldn’t care about ingredient sourcing at all?

Not at all — sourcing can matter for sustainability, allergen risk, or personal values. It just isn’t a reliable proxy for safety on its own.


The Bottom Line

“Natural” tells you where an ingredient came from. It doesn’t tell you how much is in your product, how it’s been studied, or how your body actually responds to it — and those are the things that actually determine safety. Comfrey is proof that nature doesn’t grade on safety, and well-studied synthetic preservatives are proof that a lab origin isn’t a red flag either. The label to trust isn’t “natural” or “synthetic” — it’s the evidence behind the specific ingredient in front of you.
